Castro County Healthcare introduces Cologuard DNA stool testing through the Medical Center of Dimmitt. This DNA stool testing is intended to screen adults of either sex, 50 years or older, who are at average risk for colon cancer. Cologuard is also covered by Medicare.

Cologuard was approved by the FDA in August of 2014. It is not for everyone and is not considered a replacement for diagnostic colonoscopy or surveillance colonoscopy in high – risked individuals.

So how does it work? Cologuard uses a special kind of innovative technology, called sDNA, also known as stool DNA. Through the sDNA technology they can detect cancer and highest-risk pre-cancers, making it the most accurate, noninvasive colon cancer screening test, you can rely on.

If you or a loved one believe this would be a good test for you, start by talking to your healthcare provider at the Medical Center of Dimmitt. Any doctor or nurse practitioner can assist you with questions or concerns regarding the Cologuard experience.

When or if your healthcare provider believes that this is a test for you they will order the kit, and it is conveniently shipped right to your doorstep. It requires only one stool sample, with no special prep or time off needed. There are also no changes to diet or medication for the test.

Once you have completed the at home stool sample you send the sample off to Cologuard, it is that effortless. There will be a prepaid and preaddressed UPS label along with instructions on how to pack the kit, and ship it from any UPS location or call 1-800-PICKUPS to schedule a pick up.

Cologuard will then receive your kit and their lab will test the sample within 2 weeks of arrival. They will then send the results to your healthcare provider at the Medical Center of Dimmitt who will follow up and discuss them with you.
