Dr. Leo Altenberg Joins the CCH Team

Castro County Healthcare is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Leo L. Altenberg to our medical staff.

Dr. Leo Altenberg and his wife Marlen, of Columbia, are settling down and getting used to West Texas life.  Dr. Altenberg has two adult children, Leo and Andrea.

Dr. Leo Altenberg is an accomplished and decorated scholar.  His studies began in Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire where he graduated high school with honors.  Dr. Altenberg’s first collegiate degree was a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1976.  He worked as a process engineer in a chemical and plastics plant in Corpus Christi.  He added a Master of Business Administration in Health Services from the University of Dallas in 1999, a Doctorate in Medicine from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in 1984, and completed a Family Practice Residency Program at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in 1987.

Dr. Altenberg previously practiced medicine in Seminole, Zapata, Grapevine, Gilmer, North Richland Hills, Euless, and Presidio all in Texas. In the five years leading up to his arrival at Castro County Healthcare, Dr. Altenberg worked as the Clinical Director at FCI La Tuna, Federal Bureau of Prisons in Anthony, TX.  Here he was responsible for the clinical care of 2000 inmates at three prison facilities. His professional associations include the Texas Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians.  He is also fluent in Spanish. Dr. Altenberg enjoys many things about practicing family medicine but has a special interest in treating Hepatitis C and general geriatrics.  He was drawn to Castro County Healthcare because of the full scope family practice with clinic, hospital, and ER care. He was also struck by the good nature of the staff which helps create a good work environment.

Outside of work Dr. Altenberg enjoys traveling and looks forward to expanding his already extensive list of travels.  His favorite places to travel abroad are China, Paris, Venice, and Columbia.  Here in the states he enjoys visiting California and Seattle.  Recently, he has developed an interest in learning to fly and is looking into adding the title “Pilot” to his repertoire.

Dr. Altenberg is accepting new patients into his practice.  Please call 647-2194 to schedule an appointment.
